This is such a relatable experience that doesn't get talked about enough! I wonder if there is something uniquely American about it too- this bootstrapping message, this dream of infinite possibility. I've been writing and thinking a lot about this too and I'm over 2 decades beyond you! I think it never goes away, we learn to deepen and reframe our vision.
Oh, I love these reflections by someone nearly 20 years younger than me 😊 Truly, you will figure out your purpose. And it will change with each life transition. And you will change the world, at least small corners of it, with everything you learn about those around you and the ways you apply that learning.
I could read and write about this all day; I'm thinking about it all the time. I'm the same age as you, also spend a lot of daily brainpower on APIs, and was told the same things growing up (looking at you, Molly!! :-)). I have no answers but you're not alone in these musings!!
