Hello, hello!
I’m so happy I get to share today’s writer with you because she’s one of my most important girls in all the world: My best friend, Julie. I’ve been on her to write for TLC for years but her day job (teaching!) and her two sweet boys keep her more than busy. She’s an incredible writer and an even better friend and I’d, quite honestly, be lost without her.
She and I share a love of many of the things (books, OG blogs, March Madness), so Julie knows the drill with a good city guide. She joins us here to share about a little secret in the Puget Sound of Washington: her town, Gig Harbor (which coincidentally, is also Hannah’s hometown). Julie’s nose has always been spot on—she finds the best restaurants and make up colors, among other things—so I’m certain you will love her travel guide, as well. Thanks, Jules! —Molly

Get Good Eats
A local favorite, The Tides Tavern is an iconic waterfront restaurant known for its fresh seafood, craft beers, and stunning views. The halibut fish and chips are my favorite, best eaten on the dock with a cold beer and best friends.
This amazing brunch spot is located in a beautifully restored historic netshed, with a large deck that is covered and heated in the fall/winter. Start with an oversized mimosa and skillet cinnamon rolls, and then enjoy the ricotta and sourdough pancake if you’re into sweet, or the spicy rio grande scramble if savory is your jam.
Most Importantly
This shop is exactly what you want in a bookstore. A good location, a great selection, and the owners are happy to order books if you feel inclined to ask.
Take It Outside
Kayaking and Boating
With its stunning waterfront location, Gig Harbor is perfect for kayaking and boating adventures. Rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of the local rental shops and explore the marina.
Bella Bella Beach aka the Tacoma Demaloy Sandspit
Pack some snacks and head to Fox Island (just 10 minutes from downtown Gig Harbor). The 3.5 mile sandspit is the perfect place to relax on the beach, search for beach treasures, or even whale watch in the summer. The local Orca “J” pod is known to cruise by a few times a year.
When It Rains, It Pours
Ocean5 has something for everyone. I’ve been to a million birthday parties here since they offer bowling, laser tag, video games, and Top Golf. Fortunately, they also have a farm-to-table restaurant and delicious drinks to distract you from the chaos.
Julie’s Favorite Spot
My family walks the Harborview Marina multiple times a month in all types of weather. It’s a great way to daydream about owning a boat someday and we always stop for some type of treat along the way. I highly recommend Suzanne’s Bakery and/or Iscreamery.
Shop It While It’s Hot
Harbor Greens not only has the best produce in Gig Harbor (I once bought a flat of strawberries for $5), but they are the place to go if you need a quick gift, some fancy chocolate or a killer bottle of local wine.
Bloom is a small boutique to hunt for comfy tees or cashmere beanies. I always find something to take home, including the cute tote below.
Don’t Forget to Pack
The PNW gets a bad rap for the weather. Yes, it does rain here, but not as much as you might think… Bring comfy clothes for the outdoors, a light jacket in the summer, and SPF.
Whatever do you, don’t pull out an umbrella. Most locals don’t even own one.
In gratitude,
Julie Hiles
